HomeBlogWhy Is My Refrigerator Not Cooling? — Bremerton & Kitsap WA

A refrigerator that won't cool is one of the most urgent appliance failures — food spoils within hours, and in the Pacific Northwest's mild climate, you can't just put everything outside. Here's what causes refrigerator cooling failure in Bremerton and Kitsap County, and what to check before calling for service.

The Kitsap Advantage — Soft Water

Kitsap County water is very soft — drawn from the Casad Dam and Olympic Peninsula watersheds. Calcium scale that destroys evaporator coils and condenser components in Eastern Washington markets doesn't occur here. Refrigerator failures in Bremerton and Silverdale are mechanical and electronic — not mineral. This means your appliance is likely repairable at reasonable cost.

Most Common Causes

Dirty condenser coils: The Pacific Northwest's damp, dusty air deposits material on condenser coils at the back or bottom of your refrigerator. Coils coated in dust can't dissipate heat — the compressor works harder and the refrigerator warms. Clean coils with a brush every 6-12 months.

Failed evaporator fan: The fan circulates cold air from the evaporator into the refrigerator and freezer compartments. When it fails, the freezer may stay cold while the refrigerator warms. Listen for the fan — if you don't hear it running when the compressor is on, it has likely failed.

Defrost system failure: Pacific Northwest humidity causes frost buildup on evaporator coils faster than in drier climates. When the defrost heater, defrost thermostat, or defrost timer fails, frost accumulates until airflow stops and cooling fails. This is the most common cooling failure on refrigerators 5-12 years old in the Kitsap area.

Compressor failure: Less common but more serious — compressor failure means the refrigeration system can't circulate refrigerant. LG linear compressors are the most common compressor failure we see in Bremerton and Silverdale. On LG refrigerators still under warranty, compressor replacement may be covered.

When to Call a Professional

If cleaning the condenser coils doesn't restore cooling, the repair requires a technician. Defrost system repairs, fan replacements, and compressor diagnosis all require disassembly and testing equipment. Call us for a diagnostic visit — we'll tell you exactly what's wrong and give you a fixed quote before any work begins.
